"Because I did.", and
other explanations, for the music

Do you have a question, click here and Justin will add it to this page, with an answer.
Interviewer: The title of this album is "Strange Attractors, volume one".

Justin West: Yes, it's a term used in quantum physics, I'd imagine because no one in the room could come up with a more descriptive name, and it does sound better than something like, "Absurd behavioral characteristics for absurd particles." It sounds much better being left as simply strange. The title also means by indication that there are "less than strange attractors", aswell.

Interviewer: I believe it was Hunter S. Thompson who said, "All things travel at the whim of the 'great magnet'.

Justin West: Exactly, and I prefer strangeness.

Interviewer: Alright, well lets talk about the production of this album.

Justin West: Firstly, it's important to know where my mind was at, at the time.

When I was working on it, I was obsessed with "Remote Viewing", and "Astral Projection", and since I wanted to have a soundtrack on in the background, I tried to make it as subtle and as good for this purpose as I could.

Interviewer: I can see it now, "The soundtrack for your Astral Life.", did it ever work for you, I mean did you ever leave your body.

Justin West: Many times. In fact I very much prefer to be in my Astral form. The perks are profound, and much better than Second Life, as an avatar.

Interviewer: Like What?

Justin West: Travel at the speed of thought. Being able to step out of yourself and to look back, pure and total observation of the self. Besides, how else does one cross the Grand Canyon on butterflies.

Interviewer: Sounds like fun.

Justin West: Yes and no, my own experiences have all been very good, but its like living in a dream, you know. Its being able to have a waking dream, to fly if you want, or bouce, but its the travelling at the speed of thought which I like the most. All you have to do is think about where you'd like to be, or who you'd like to see, and there you are.

I think einstein mis-spoke when he said that nothing can go faster than light, he forgot the speed of thought and dreams.

Interviewer: You did it all while living alone in Ballston Spa, right.

Justin West: Yes indeedy, Bee Spa. It took two full years of listening to the playback, interspersed with sequencing, sampling and mixing work.

Interviewer: What sequencer did you use?

Justin West: I used Emagic's Logic, back when it was, it is now Apple's Logic, a copious number of audio filters, and a rack mount with everything I couldn't get or make myself, in soft form.

Interviewer: Like what?

Justin West: Well, I had a stereo Mutronics Mutator, a Line 6 Pod xt, a couple of bright green Filter Factories, an outboard vocoder, and a stereo DBX 31 level Pitch Shifter, and a few synths: Ensoniq ASR-10, a Novation SuperNova, and a Korg Karma.

I also had a full on Pearl Masters drum kit, in the basement of that house, with cable drops from the amps to the mics down there.

And an amazing pre-made sample library, which I tried to bury as much as possible, prefering to make my own samples from found sounds.

Interviewer: How'd you get into music?

Justin West: Well, it must be in my blood, or not depending on what you thought while you were listening.

Interviewer: No, no, as wierd as it is, while I wouldn't call it neccesarily "music", there are tracks which are quite musical.

Justin West: What did you really think?

Interviewer: I liked it. The sounds are just so foreign to my ears, so chaotic and starange, and I applaude your efforts to try and do something as unusual, in such an unusual way.

Justin West: Thank you, I get an E for effort.

Interviewer: No, I'd give the album as a whole, a solid B, with instances of A+. For instance, the track, "Winter Geese", through "Hatch", those are genuine A+ tracks, but it all flows well as a whole, and think you should be very happy with it.

Justin West: Oh, I am, or it'd still be unreleased.
